Austria´s gas supply in transition

Credit Markets Special Report , 5. Sep.
The move away from Russian gas and the EU climate targets represent two challenges for Austria's energy supply. Natural gas is currently an indispensable energy source for energy-intensive key industries and 1.1 million households. However, as of January 1, 2025, there is a threat that Russian gas supplies will cease. However, infrastructure capacities, gas storage facilities and alternative sources mean that a gas shortage is unlikely. In addition, there is a strong expansion of global liquefied natural gas capacities with a simultaneously growing role of natural gas as a bridging technology for decarbonization.
