Collections

Our history in objects. From savings containers to posters.

Our collections provide insight into 200 years of banking history. They include physical objects, documents, media, and curiosities from the world of saving and economics.

Historical savings objects

The collection of savings containers is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It comprises around 4,000 money boxes, purses, and money containers from all over the world – from ancient times to the present day. The objects are made of a variety of materials and are characterized in part by unusual shapes.

Advertising materials and posters

Around 1,000 posters and advertising motifs from the interwar period to the present day document not only the history of the Erste österreichische Spar-Casse and other savings banks, but also the respective social zeitgeist.

The works of Heinz Traimer, one of Austria's most important commercial artists, deserve special attention.

Documents

From the founding charter to minutes and historical savings books to balance sheets and annual reports: the document collection forms the written basis of the Sparkasse's history since 1819.

Photo and media archive

The photo and media archive covers a wide range of topics. Photos, slides, films, and audio recordings document the history of savings education, the corporate culture of the savings bank, advertising messages from different eras, and much more.

Branches and architecture

Our branch history reflects the transformation of banking and society. Construction plans, historical views, and photographs show how branches have changed since the 19th century. The collection documents the development from the classic cashier's hall to the modern service center and illustrates the transformation of architectural design.
