About the project

With the Super Hybrid Park in Nickelsdorf, the Burgenland-based energy company PÜSPÖK is implementing one of the most innovative energy projects in Europe. The site combines photovoltaics, wind power, and battery storage in a single location, making it one of the largest hybrid parks in Europe. The aim of the project is not only to generate renewable energy, but also to store it efficiently and feed it into the grid flexibly. Hybrid solutions like this balance weather-related fluctuations and make a decisive contribution to grid stability and security of supply.

A key element is the expansion of storage capacity: with the commissioning of Austria’s largest battery storage system in June 2026, the site will gain additional flexibility. This will allow surplus energy to be stored temporarily and used as needed.

In addition to technological innovation, the project also sets new standards in land use. Through agri-photovoltaics, agricultural land is used twice—both for food production and electricity generation. Already today, PÜSPÖK’s existing wind and agri-PV facilities supply around 338,000 households with clean energy.

The project demonstrates what the energy supply of the future could look like—“renewable, flexible, and independent of fossil fuels,” emphasizes Lukas Püspök, CEO of PÜSPÖK.

The hybrid park is part of the European REPowerEU program, which aims to accelerate the expansion of renewable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The project is also supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The financing underlines Erste Bank’s strategic role in transforming the energy system in Austria and the CEE region. The project shows how the energy transition can be implemented in practice while strengthening the country’s energy independence, emphasizes Gerda Holzinger-Burgstaller, CEO of Erste Bank. As a financing partner, the bank is directing capital specifically into solutions that combine security of supply with decarbonization.

About PÜSPÖK

PÜSPÖK is an Austrian, family-owned energy company based in Burgenland that has been actively shaping the energy transition since the late 1990s. The company develops, finances, builds, and operates renewable energy plants—from wind power and photovoltaics to battery storage—covering the entire value chain from project idea to long-term operation.

Starting with one of the first privately initiated wind power projects in Austria, PÜSPÖK has grown into one of the country’s largest private producers of renewable energy and today supplies several hundred thousand households with clean electricity.

With a clear focus on innovation, sustainable land use, and integrated energy solutions, the company aims to further accelerate the expansion of renewable energy and actively contribute to the transformation of the energy system in Austria and beyond.
