“Free in-branch Wi-Fi is high up on our clients’ wish list, as Internet access is now becoming part of the daily life routine. We’ve listened to our clients and by offering free Wi-Fi we’re aiming to make their experience in the branch even more productive. The branch remains an important touch point, especially for advisory services, but at the same time we encourage our clients to manage their accounts digitally. So with this initiative we combine the benefits of personal in-branch service and mobile banking – for example our clients can get hands-on advice on how to get started online and how various features such as mobile payments work,” said Peter Bosek, Chief Retail Officer of Erste Group Bank. ”At Erste we’re aiming to be the go-to digital provider in CEE. In many of our markets we’re first digital movers – for example Erste Bank Hungary is now the only Hungarian bank providing free Wi-Fi across the whole network,” added Bosek.

As by now, all the branches of Erste Bank Hungary and Erste Bank a.d. Novi Sad in Serbia are completely Wi-Fi covered. Erste Bank Croatia (almost 70%), Erste Bank Oesterreich & Sparkassen (almost 50%) and Ceska sporitelna (80%) are partially covered; full coverage will be rolled out in the upcoming period.

The safety of Wi-Fi usage in Erste Group branches is ensured by employing the most secure protocols to protect users. Customers are advised to check that they are directed to the correct Erste branded landing page, which also lists the bank's terms and conditions. Furthermore, the activity is also being monitored by IT for security purposes and to guard against any criminal activity.

Only Banca Comerciala Romana and Slovenska sporitelna do not have Wi-Fi coverage in the branches yet because their customers displayed low interest in it. Slovenská sporitelna´s own tests showed that their customers are satisfied with touchscreens in each of 291 branches where they can easily access online banking.

Mobile Internet penetration in Central and Eastern Europe was 53% in 2014 and is expected to grow to 72% by 2017. In 2014, 72% of the “online population” accessed the internet from their mobile phone. This figure is expected to grow to 92% in 2017.
