Coronavirus turns World Savings Day into two World Savings Weeks

This year, World Savings Day would have been on 30 October. Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, however, there won’t just be a single World Savings Day, but rather a festival of saving and money matters spread over two weeks. The World Savings Weeks run by Erste Bank und Sparkassen will this year be held across Austria from 19 to 30 October.

Health takes top priority

As people’s health is the most important thing of all, and large gatherings need to keep being avoided, Erste Bank und Sparkassen have decided to spread this traditional day out over two weeks. ‘This ensures there will be no mass gatherings all on the one day’, says Thomas Schaufler, Director of Private Customer Business at the Erste Bank. All customers are encouraged to embrace the extended period and maintain physical distancing at branches. High-risk groups such as older people aged 65 and over, or persons with pre-existing conditions, should continue to exercise particular caution and avoid peak times. This way, any customers not wanting to miss out on the current services can still be guaranteed a safe visit. The traditional World Savings Day gifts will still be given out this year, and will be available from supervi-sors over the two-week period. The Sparkassen Group will once again also be offering the ‘3% Sparefroh Sparen’ product, which gives children aged 10 and under guaranteed interest of 3% per annum for the first 500 euros they put in savings.

The programme of supporting events, with snacks, drinks and children’s activities, and which was very popular in many parts of the country, has unfortunately had to be foregone this year for safety reasons.
