Green Breeze Wind Farm officially completed as Erste Group and BCR support renewable energy transition in Romania
- Green Breeze Wind Farm reaches commercial operation in Romania
- Largest project completed by Nala Renewables to date
- Apple secures renewable energy from the project through a long-term power purchase agreement
- Project highlights Romania's growing importance in Europe's energy transition
The Green Breeze Wind Farm, financed by Erste Group and BCR and developed by Nala Renewables, has reached commercial operation. With a capacity of 99.2 MW, the project is now fully operational and delivering renewable electricity to the Romanian grid.
Located mainly in the municipality of Cuca in Galați County, the wind farm consists of 16 Vestas V162-6.2 MW turbines with a total installed capacity of 99.2 MW. The project is expected to generate approximately 312 GWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to supply around 51,000 households and avoid approximately 150,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.
A project of international relevance
The project will supply clean energy to Apple through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). This underlines the growing importance of Romania as a destination for renewable energy investments and as a partner for global companies pursuing ambitious decarbonisation targets.
The project demonstrates how international capital, sustainable financing and long-term demand for renewable energy can come together to accelerate decarbonisation while creating economic value at the local level.
Strong partnership delivers critical energy infrastructure
"Green Breeze reflects our ability to execute and deliver critical utility scale infrastructure projects, and I am proud to share that this is our largest project to date to achieve commercial operation. I would like to thank our team at Nala Renewables and all our partners for their dedication throughout the journey from development through to completion. As a leading independent power producer, this project showcases our ability to develop, build and invest in high-quality projects across our core markets. The project will deliver long-term environmental and economic value for the region, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the region's energy future," says Remy Verot, Interim CEO, Nala Renewables.
"We are proud to have supported Nala Renewables in bringing the Green Breeze wind farm to completion. This achievement reflects the strength of collaboration between all partners involved and demonstrates how sustainable finance can help deliver critical energy infrastructure. Green Breeze will create long-term value for local communities and the wider economy. Seeing a global company such as Apple commit to sourcing renewable energy from this project sends a strong signal about the attractiveness of Romania's renewable energy market and its importance within Europe's energy transition," says Markus Kriegler, Head of Group Corporates at Erste Group Bank AG.
"Green Breeze was one of the first projects we financed in Romania's new wave of renewable energy, and today it is delivering clean power to the grid and strengthening the country's energy security. As the leading banking partner for energy projects in Romania, we are proud of an excellent collaboration with Nala Renewables from day one," says Bogdan Cernescu, Director Corporate Banking, BCR.
Long-term commitment to the energy transition
The completion of Green Breeze reflects the shared commitment of Nala Renewables, Erste Group, BCR and all project partners to support investments that strengthen renewable energy generation and contribute to Europe's energy transition.
For Erste Group and BCR, the project is another example of supporting sustainable infrastructure that creates environmental, economic and societal value across Central and Eastern Europe.
