Car sales drop in the EU major markets, vary in CEE

In January 2025, new car registrations declined by -2.6% y/y in the European Union. The blocs major markets saw declines, such as France (-6.2%), Italy (-5.8%), and Germany (-2.8%). In the European Union the market share of electric cars (including hybrids) increased over last year. Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 39.4% in January 2025, down from 48.7% one year ago. The trend in the region is quite similar. The share of electric cars has increased and in January 2025 slightly more than half of the newly registered cars were electric cars. Registrations of petrol and diesel cars fell to 49% in January 2025 from 54% in January 2024. As for car registrations overall, the CEE region showed mixed performance. In Hungary, Poland and Slovenia car registrations went up while in other countries they declined in January. Hungary experienced the biggest increase (13.4%) while Slovakia the biggest decline (-16.4%).
